Saluting Young Soldier

Who is Young Soldier?
Young Soldier is an influential hip hop artist inspiring people through his music.

What got you into hip-hop?
Growing up I was into the hip hop fashion trend & watching American music videos which made me fall in-love with the genre

Explain your rap style?
I’ve still got a lot of that old school hip hop in me so my style is a lot like how they did it back in the day however I still try to keep it fresh & true.

What do you do when you’re not doing what you regularly do?
When I’m not in studio or performing I spend time with my family. I hang out with my boys when I get a chance to. I live a fairly normal life. 🙂

Tell us what you do to prepare for a performance.
I rehearse as if I was opening for Beyonce.  LOL… Nah, I rehearse a lot in front of the mirror (true story) & I just stay focused. I try to keep calm & a prayer always helps when I’m preparing because I stress a lot.

Which is your favourite venue to perform in and why?
It’s always been dope to perform at the kite festival held every year in Muizenberg; the crowd response is always amazing so I’d say that is one of my favourites

Tell us about the best part of your work.
To be honest the best part of all this is making music, being in studio coming up with new concepts & watching it all come together to create a kick ass project

Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
I see myself producing my own music having hustled myself studio equipment & helping other upcoming artist reach their full potential in this industry. I also want to learn more about the business side of things.

Who is your inspiration/Role Model?
My kids are my inspiration, my mom & my gran are my role models they are who I look up to.

Your views around the Cape Town hip-hop scene?
Cape Town hip-hop scene? There are a lot of talented hip hop artists in Cape Town. My views? Egos are sometimes bigger than their dreams. If more Cape Town artists can just support each other we can overcome these assumptions of JHB being better than CPT in terms of making it (in this industry).

If you could work with any producer/artist who would it be?
If given the opportunity I would like to work with Sketchy Bongo (producer) & YoungstaCPT (artist). Internationally, TI would be my 1st choice though. I’ve been a fan since day one.

PlayStation or Xbox and what is your favourite game?
I’m not too familiar with Xbox so PlayStation, Need for Speed would be the game I’d go for no doubt.

Last gift you gave someone?
A skateboard (to my daughter)

Are you superstitious?
No

What word do you use the most?
Studio

What is your least favourite thing about the music scene lately?
The fact that musicians don’t remain humble after they think they’ve made it

What is your most embarrassing moment?
Having my music shut off while performing

What can we expect from Young Soldier in 2017?
A lot of new music, also I’m looking to drop a music video later this year. To stay updated with my hustle you guys can check out my social media pages

If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be?
Crime

What is your biggest fear?
Being trapped inside of an elevator. LOL

If it’s our last conversation, what word of advice would you give me?
I’d say keep doing your bit to make our world a better place. Keep a smile on your face however bad it seems. If u have a passion for something then never stop doing it.
